CBD Oil in Treating Epilepsy – Things You Should Know
Epilepsy is a serious disorder that leads to sudden seizures caused by a rush of electrical reaction in the human brain. It is a common condition that occurs in more than 65 million people worldwide. It can be caused by extremely low blood sugar, head trauma and when an individual is undergoing alcohol withdrawal. It is more common in children and older people and occurs more in males than in females. There are two kinds of seizures; generalized and focal. Generalized seizures affect the entire brain while focal affects a part of the brain.
Epilepsy Triggers
There environmental, psychological as well as man-made elements that can trigger these seizures. Some individuals claim that they experience the seizures due to lack of sleep, some experience them due to stress and others when they have a fever or an illness. Bright lights or specific light patterns can also trigger seizures in some people. Others get them after taking alcohol, drugs, too much caffeine, skipping meals or eating in excess. It is usually very difficult to identify a specific trigger, but you can keep a record of the possible triggers to identify when it happens in you and how you can control it.
What is CBD Oil?
Cannabidiol oil, also known as CBD oil is an extract of the cannabis plant, popularly known as marijuana. It is this oil that is legalized in various states across the United States of America (USA) to be used for clinical purposes. It is important, however, that you check the laws governing the use of this oil in your jurisdiction. Every state has its own laws regarding the extraction and use of CBD oil. The other extract from marijuana that is illegal and which is responsible for getting people high is tetrahydrocannabinol also called THC.
How Does CBD Oil Treat Epilepsy?
About two-thirds of patients that have tried CBD oil as an alternative to other medicine have recorded positive results. The experts from the website CBDTrust say that patients should respond at least to the first or the second treatment. If a patient fails to show any improvement after the second medication, the likelihood of the third medication to work is less than one percent. Even though CBD oil does not provide a total cure for epilepsy patients, it does help a great deal and reliefs patients off the need to use other medications most of which have serious side effects.
CBD oil can only be prescribed as a last resort by a specialist. General practitioners are barred from prescribing this medication and can only refer you to a specialist. The law requires specialists to consider all other available options first and only prescribe CBD oil-based medication.
According to some studies, you can add CBD oil to normal medication to treat the condition in children and young adults. The anticonvulsant properties in cannabis oil work on different targets to alter the cells’ activity. These targets include the calcium and sodium ion channels, the GATA system, glutamate receptor and the receptor agonists within the brain. The anticonvulsant chemicals in CBD oi alter the manner in which neurotransmitters send impulses and also get attached to those neurons, altering the flow of ions in and out of the neurons.
According to another study conducted in 2003 at the Virginia Commonwealth University, researchers found that cannabinoids have medical benefits absent in other prescriptions. They found out that the cannabinoids are able to depress seizures by activating CB1 receptors present in the areas of the brain related to memory and also in patients’ nervous system.
Limitations to the Use of CBD Oil
Opponents of the use of cannabis oil claim that the oil might contain high levels of THC, the component responsible for the “high” associated with cannabis. Most states and countries are thus, restricting the use of this substance. It’s only Canada and a few states in the US that have the substance legal though for medical purposes only. Even in these areas, treatment using CBD oil for epilepsy is only allowed for intractable epilepsy only. This is a situation in which the patient has failed to respond to all other forms of medication. All in all, progress is being made to have cannabis oil legal in other parts of the world thanks to studies that have shown its positive effects.
