How to Help Someone with Depression – 7 Ways to Help Your Loved One How to Help Someone with Depression – 7 Ways to Help Your Loved One
It is wonderful when a person realizes that he is depressed and he understands that there is nothing good for him and he wants to beat depression. But unfortunately, few people are able to cope with depression on their own (but if you want to beat depression on your own you can always use recommendations discussed in this article). However, the severity and intensity of depression can be various. For example, if the person deals with a stressful event, in this case, he is not able to cope with depression alone. One wonders how to help someone with depression…
What should you do if the depressed person doesn’t do anything in order to beat this disease, he simply doesn’t care? But you care what will happen with your close one. What should you do when your loved and close one is depressed, how can you help? You will find answers to these questions in this article.
Rules to observe at dealing with somebody’s depression:
Do not feel sorry for this person: «My poor boy (or girl)…»! You can love him, but you can’t feel sorry! Pity drains person’s strength, makes depression worse. It is harder for him to get rid of depression. Remember you should help but not to make the situation worse.
Do not wait that it will go away on its own, depression is not a runny nose. It may never go away if a person experiences stress for a long period of time. Sometimes depression triggers schizophrenia, which was left untreated.
Do not say: “I understand you it is such a difficult situation in your life…” Vice versa, you should say: “You are strong, you can handle it, and you need to be prepared for any life test, challenge, and you will overcome everything…” Once legendary Rocky said:
“But it ain’t about how hard you hit; it’s about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward.”
Depression cases vary, so do the methods
Of course, ways can be different: gentle or extreme. In order to help the person overcome stress you have to organize new stress, but you should be careful with such experiments.
What approach to this situation you should choose and what idea you must convey to your close one?
It is important to have the proper attitude to depression and not only – all the problems should be resolved quickly and easily! It is preferable to overcome all life difficulties with dignity! It should be a goal if a person wants to find his happiness and success. It is needed to overcome all the downs, pass through difficult times as quickly as possible.
So what problem to solve and what methods to use? It does not depend on the causes of depression, they can be different: the loss of loved ones (death, etc.), divorce, cheating, betrayal, physical trauma (illness, injury), trouble in business, bankruptcy, loss of interest in everything, and so on.
How to help someone with depression
A rapid, sudden change! Taking the situation into your hands, you organize, for example, travelling somewhere, and here is the point №1: he should escape from his living space in which he is about to suffer the rest of his days. The best way to help your loved one is to find a special place where he can stop thinking about his problems and enjoy the beauty of our world: mountains, an ocean, where he can feel positive emotional shock. After all, the main task is to bring the person back to life, get him out of his little world in which he is suffering and struggling.
Different procedures! A cold shower can be helpful in order to return feelings.
Other examples of the most serious situations where people were able to overcome! Remember there are no unique situations. The problem that you or your loved ones experience was solved by other people million times. So you can show a video (movies, interviews, TV shows) or read about such people, learn about their lives.
Show examples of overcoming similar situations. Such examples evoke high feelings and provide a clear understanding that having such problems does not mean the end of life, on the contrary, this is the beginning of a new and happy life.
In fact, the person has to make a choice – to break down and suffer or become stronger in order to solve the problem and achieve more progress. Guess – what will your loved one be grateful for: if you leave him suffer or help overcome and become a winner?
Speak with your close one – help him make the right decisions. But you should talk only if the depressed is sober and sane. If possible, help the person find some advantages of his situation. Represent him a better picture of the future – what happens if he overcomes and becomes stronger. Thus, he will be able to make the right decision. Help him define new goals in life, consider all the possible options.
Help him take first steps, make positive decisions – encourage! In such cases, the person should see and feel that you believe in him when he does not believe in himself.
Be an example! You should be in good mood, smile sincerely. Share your positive attitude with your close one.
The most important thing anyone can do for the depressed person is to help him or her get an appropriate diagnosis and treatment. On occasion, it may require making an appointment and accompanying the depressed person to the doctor. It may also mean monitoring whether the depressed person is taking medication or attending therapy.
Eventually, with treatment, most people with depression do get better. Keep that in mind, and keep reassuring the depressed person that, with time and help, he will feel better. Sometimes it helps just to become a good listener because most of what a person with depression needs is just someone who will listen.
