Hawthorne
Hawthorne is mostly known for its comfort to the heart since it lowers high blood pressure and reduces chest pains. But it is also good for gently calming anxiety and depression. To use it for this purpose, a person can either pick a few berries to eat when they are feeling blue or just take a low-dose capsule of it. Studies have shown that it is one of the few supplements that can be taken on a long-term basis for years without any harmful side effects or withdrawal symptoms.
Gotu Kola
This delicate, water-loving plant grows near streams and rivers, so many people harvest handfuls of it to garnish their meals with. But it has a better purpose than this. Just two leaves a day can improve depression and boost the memory. And it is so safe that even children can take it. When looking for it in a capsule form, be sure to remember that it is also called “bacopa.”
Lavender

Passion Flower
The sweet flavor of passion flower extract makes it perfect for flavoring bottles of fruit punch that are sold in grocery stores. This flower grows on a long, trailing vine that can quickly take over a fence in a summer season if it is never pruned. So, food manufacturers take advantage of its high rate of growth by planting fields of it to use for their concoctions. It only grows in certain climates though, so most people have to purchase it in a dried, powdered form.
Kava
The kava root is a natural tranquilizer that works fast to calm depression and anxiety. It can make a person sleepy though. So never take it before operating heavy machinery or vehicles of any kind. Also, this herb can only be taken occasionally because using it on a long-term basis could potentially damage a person’s liver.
St. John’s Wort
German doctors prescribe this flower to their patients before they ever employ any other stronger medications because it has been proven to work just as effectively as pharmaceuticals to boost the level of serotonin in the body. The only side effects that can come from it are sensitive to sunlight and thinner blood.
Valerian
This plant is one of the strongest treatments for mild depression. Like kava, it can cause drowsiness though. So, most people take it before they go to bed when they are struggling with insomnia or depressive thoughts that are keeping them awake. Never mix valerian with any of the other herbal remedies that have been mentioned because they could increase this side effect.
These are just ten of the natural remedies that are available for treating mild depression. There are many others sold in most health food stores. But remember, before taking any of them always check with your doctor first to make sure that they won’t interfere with any of the other medications that you take.
